The burden of proof for our pet ideas

I think a lot of people are probably guilty of this, myself included: when we want to believe something, our standards for the amount of proof for the idea are reduced. However, if someone opposes us, we require absurd amounts of evidence or we simply ignore theirs. If you are an academic, I encourage you to consider at what level you place the ‘bar’ for proving things you’re keen on and where you place that same bar for things you find yourself not liking.
